WhAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, primarily those related to the spine. Chiropractors employ a variety of manual techniques, particularly spinal manipulation or adjustment, to address issues such as misalignments of the spine (subluxations) and other related neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

KEY ASPECTS OF CHIROPRACTIC

  1. Spinal Manipulation and Adjustment: Chiropractors use their hands or specialized instruments to apply controlled force to specific joints of the spine or other parts of the body. This manipulation is aimed at improving joint mobility, restoring proper alignment, and alleviating pain.
  2. Holistic Approach: Chiropractic care often emphasizes a holistic approach to healthcare, recognizing the interconnectedness of the body’s systems and the importance of lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and stress management in maintaining overall health and well-being.
  3. Patient-Centered Care: Chiropractors typically engage in patient-centered care, taking into account each individual’s unique needs, preferences, and health goals. Treatment plans may involve a combination of manual adjustments, therapeutic exercises, ergonomic and postural advice, and other modalities tailored to the patient’s condition.
  4. Preventive Care: In addition to addressing current health issues, chiropractors may also focus on preventive care, aiming to identify and address potential musculoskeletal problems before they develop into more serious conditions.
  5. Education and Empowerment: Chiropractors often emphasize patient education and empowerment, providing information and guidance on self-care strategies, ergonomic principles, injury prevention, and lifestyle modifications to support optimal musculoskeletal health.

Is chiropractic Safe?

Chiropractic treatments are among some of the safest treatments used in the health care field. Millions of adjustments are provided each day in the US while recording an extremely low number of adverse effects. Much safer than many of the other treatment alternatives.

THE HISTORY OF CHIROPRACTIC AT PAIN WEST

Chiropractic care at Pain West began in 2009 as Papillion Chiropractic. Through the years we treated thousands of patients and saw amazing results, but we always felt that patients would benefit from a comprehensive pain management team. In 2016, Papillion Chiropractic became a part of the multi-specialty team that currently makes up Pain West. Today, patients are welcome to utilize chiropractic as a “stand alone” service or take advantage of a comprehensive team approach.

ARE CHIROPRACTORS DOCTORS?

Chiropractors are doctors of chiropractic, holding a professional degree known as a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.). They undergo extensive education and training in chiropractic colleges, which typically involves four years of undergraduate study followed by four to five years of specialized chiropractic education.

While chiropractors are indeed “doctors” in the sense that they hold a doctoral degree, it’s important to note that their scope of practice and the focus of their training is distinct from medical doctors (M.D.s) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (D.O.s). Chiropractors primarily focus on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly those related to the spine, through manual manipulation and adjustments whereas M.Ds or D.Os primarily focus on pharmaceutical or sugical interventions.

What techniques are used?

The team at Pain West evaluates each patient individually and incorporates treatments focused on reaching their specific needs. We implement many different types of chiropractic and associated therapies – from manual (hands on) techniques to activator (instrument) adjusting to techniques focusing on soft-tissue.

What conditions respond well?

Chiropractic care is commonly sought for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those related to the spine, that may benefit from manual manipulation and other chiropractic techniques.

  1. Low Back Pain: Chiropractic manipulation, particularly spinal adjustments, is often used to alleviate acute and chronic low back pain. Studies have shown that chiropractic care can be effective in improving pain and function in individuals with nonspecific low back pain.
  2. Neck Pain: Chiropractic adjustments of the cervical spine can help relieve tension, stiffness, and pain associated with neck pain, including conditions such as cervical spondylosis and whiplash injuries.
  3. Headaches and Migraines: Some individuals find relief from tension headaches and migraines through chiropractic adjustments, especially when tension or misalignments in the neck and upper spine are contributing factors.
  4. Joint Pain and Dysfunction: Chiropractic manipulation may benefit individuals with joint pain and dysfunction in various joints of the body, including the shoulders, hips, knees, and wrists.
  5. Sciatica: Sciatica, characterized by pain, numbness, or tingling radiating down the leg, may respond well to chiropractic care, particularly through adjustments aimed at relieving pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  6. Auto Accidents: Chiropractic care can offer significant benefits for individuals recovering from auto accidents, particularly those experiencing musculoskeletal injuries such as whiplash, neck pain, and back pain. Through gentle spinal adjustments, chiropractors can help realign the spine, alleviate pressure on nerves, and reduce inflammation, promoting natural healing processes and restoring mobility. Additionally, chiropractic care often includes soft tissue therapies and rehabilitative exercises to address muscle stiffness, improve range of motion, and prevent long-term complications. By addressing the root cause of pain and dysfunction, chiropractic care supports a holistic approach to recovery, helping individuals regain function, alleviate discomfort, and enhance overall well-being following an auto accident.
  7. Sports Injuries: Chiropractic care is often utilized in the management of sports-related injuries, such as sprains, strains, and overuse injuries, to promote healing, restore function, and prevent recurrence.
  8. Muscle Tension and Spasms: Chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue techniques can help alleviate muscle tension, spasms, and stiffness, commonly experienced in conditions such as fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome.
  9. Postural Issues: Chiropractic care may be beneficial for addressing postural imbalances and alignment issues that contribute to musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, including forward head posture and rounded shoulders.
  10. Pregnancy-related Pain: Pregnant women experiencing back pain, pelvic pain, or other musculoskeletal discomforts may find relief through chiropractic adjustments and supportive therapies tailored to their unique needs.
  11. Arthritis: While chiropractic care cannot cure arthritis, it can help manage symptoms and improve joint mobility and function in individuals with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other forms of arthritis.
